Auroras have been lighting up the skies here in southern New Zealand after a giant X-class solar flare occurred on the Sun last Friday (NZ time).
X-class are the largest grade of solar flares, and have the potential trigger planet-wide radio blackouts. The flare is part of the Sun’s 11 year cycle, which is due to be at its worst in 2013.
